The road test is extremely simple as long as you keep you composure and remain calm throughout the process. Here’s a few tips to help get you ready for your road test.
- Make sure your paperwork is in order or you will not be able to take the test. No refunds are provided for unpreparedness.
- You’ll need a road test application filled out and signed at the appropriated place. Please download it here if you didn’t print if from your profile when you scheduled the test.
- A legible learner’s permit in order to take the road test.
- If you’re renting our vehicle, arrive to the test site early.
- Be polite and respectful to everyone within the vehicle at all times. Any disrespect towards our instructors or road test examiners will not be tolerated.
- Failure is an event and not a person so don’t take it personally if you don’t do well on the test. Practice and you can take the test again.
- Obey speed limit at all times.
- If you do not see any speed limit signs within the parking lot, the National Motorist Association recommends staying below 15 MPH at all times. Slower speed allows you to process everything that’s happening and make corrective actions as needed.
- Use turn signal when changing vehicle position.
- Pulling over to the curb, pulling away from the curb, turning, 3-point turn and parallel parking.
- Yield to pedestrian at all times and make sure you communicate clearly with other roadway users. You can do so by using your hands to wave them through or flashing your headlights to give them the right of way.
- Turn on headlights under adverse conditions (rain/fog/snow/low visibility).
- Come to a complete stop at the stop line/sign before entering or crossing the intersection
- Creep forward gently (foot on the brake) if your vision of the intersection is blocked by parked cars/trees/brush/etc.
As the road test begins, the examiner will perform a basic vehicle inspection. The examiner will walk around the car and ask you to turn on various lights (turn signals, reverse lights, brake lights and headlights) to make sure they all work. The examiner will then ask you turn show them the windshield wipers and beep the horn lightly to make sure it works.
Light Switch
To turn the lights ON in our vehicle, twist the turn signal stalk upward as shown in the picture below. To turn the lights OFF in our vehicle is just the opposite, twist the turn signal stalk downward as shown in the picture. Keep in mind lights must be turned on if you’re using the windshield wipers.
Hand Signals
Before leaving the test site, the examiner will ask you to illustrate hand signals but you will not be required to use them throughout the test. If you do not get your hand signals correct, you will fail the road test without leaving the parking spot. Follow the diagram below to see the three different type of hand signal that can be used while operating a motor vehicle.
Parking on a hill
Parking on a hill is one of the maneuvers the RMV examiner will ask you to perform on your road test. Simply turn the wheels in the direction as shown in the picture and secure you vehicle by putting it in park, engage the emergency brake and then releasing the brake pedal.
