Getting your driver’s license may seem like a daunting task but we’re here to help in any way that we can.  The picture above show the sequences that you should follow in order to get your driver’s license here in Massachusetts. Each step is also explained below.

  1. We always recommend coming to driver’s ed class first so we can teach basic driving skills, rules of the road, and prepare you for the permit test.  You’re eligible to take the class at the age of 15 years and 9 months.
  2. If you’re under the age of 18, one of your parents must attend a parent class before you take road lessons. We recommend that parents come into the parent class before road lessons because it will give them an idea of what will take place on each lesson and how the whole driver’s education program is setup.
  3. Next on the list should be getting your permit when you turn 16.  Waiting to get your permit will only delay you from getting a driver’s license since you have to hold a learner’s permit with a clean driving record for 6 months to become eligible for a road test.
  4. You now have 6 months to complete the required 12-hour of driving lesson and 6-hour of observation time. If you missed a driver’s ed class, you should make them up before your eligibility date.
  5. You’re eligible for a road test after you hold a learner’s permit with a clean driving record for 6 months.  Getting done with everything after having your permit for 3 months is a waste since the RMV will not allow you to book a road test until you hold your permit for the 6-month period. The sound clip below shows what you will typically hear when we send up your paperwork early and you have not met the 6 month requirements.
  6. After you have completed all of the driver’s education requirements, we can process your certificate request online.  Flint Driving School ONLY processes certificate request on Thursdays of each week.  So if you complete your driver’s education program on a Saturday, we’ll process the certificate request on the following Thursday of the next week. It generally takes 7 business days for the processing of your driver’s education certificate.
  7. Nothing else can be done until your information shows up in the database showing that you’ve completed the driver’s education requirements.
  8. Once you’re in the database system, a road test date can be requested and the only way to schedule a road test with the RMV is to visit their online portal.  The portal will provide a step by step guide on how to setup the appointment with the RMV test site of your choice.  Please keep in mind we provide road test support only at the Fall River test site until further notice.
  9. After getting your road test appointment, now you just have to pass the road test!  Here’s a few things to keep in mind.
    • You can elect to pay for the road test in advance in order to avoid waiting in-line at the RMV after you’ve completed your road test.
    • You can elect to use your own vehicle on the road test but it must pass inspection, have an emergency brake in the center console, and insured in the state where the car is registered.
    • You can elect to use one of our driving school’s vehicle and have our instructor sponsor your road test.  Please click on the Road Test menu option and follow the direction on the page to reserve our vehicle.
